Ozren's mother, a Yugoslavian refugee, has been a prostitute his whole life, though recently she has become more of a high-class call girl than a streetwalker. Ozren's mother moves out when he turns sixteen, ostensibly so he can have their tiny apartment to himself. The abandonment is too much for Ozren to take, and, from the building's common bathroom that has always been his haven from the troubles of the world, he confesses to his mother's murder.
